Before Fame
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1968 and subsequently received his MA and PhD from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. After serving in the U.S. Army in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he served as a foreign policy and economic adviser during the administrations of Nixon, Ford and Carter.
