Before Fame

He graduated from the US Military Academy with a degree in engineering in 1980. He was later selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1996. 

Trivia

He worked as the commander of the NEEMO 3 aquanaut underwater mission, where he lived and worked underwater for six days. He participated in the first ever NASA Tweet-up in October 2009, and obtained the first live Twitter connection for NASA in space.
