In 2014 he was at the center of a tragedy when during a triathalon one of his fellow runners severely injured himself and nearly fell off the side of cliff. Pérez stayed with the man all through the night, but when a helicopter came to the rescue, it crashed and three rescue workers died. He, his friend and the lone helicopter survivor were all eventually rescued.
