Acclaimed 15th-century Flemish painter known for his use of optical perspective and oil paint. His most famous paintings include The Arnolfini Wedding and The Annunciation. A 1433 painting titled Portrait of a Man is believed to be one of his works.
Before Fame
He was a court painter for John of Bavaria at The Hague.
Trivia
In the year 2020, restoration work on his painting The Ghent Altarpiece went viral online. A side-by-side showing before and after work on a lamb's "new" face was circulated widely. About 20 surviving paintings are confidently attributed to him, as well as the Ghent Altarpiece and the illuminated miniatures of the Turin-Milan Hours, all dated between 1432 and 1439.
Family Life
He and his wife Margareta had ten children. His brother Hubert van Eyck was also a famous painter.
