About
Commander of the famous Apollo 13 space mission and the first person to fly to the moon twice without making a landing. He was a Congressional Space Medal of Honor recipient. He went on to co-author a book, titled Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13. He was on four space missions: Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13.
Before Fame
He loved to build model rockets as a boy and demonstrated an early interest in rocketry. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Trivia
He was the first person to fly into space four times and spent a grand total of 29 days, 19 hours, and 3 minutes above the Earth. After retiring from the navy and space program, he opened up a restaurant in Lake Forest, Illinois, which went on to be successful.
Family Life
He married Marilyn Gerlach in 1952 and had four children. Marilyn passed away from natural causes at the age of 93.
