She earned a scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) at age sixteen, two years after her grandparents demanded that she sacrifice her secondary education for that of her younger brother.

She died of breast cancer in her sixties.

She had a thirty-five-year marriage to director Alvin Rakoff that produced two children, John and Sasha.
