He attended Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland along with his twin brother, who captained their top side. Jack was vice captain. After graduating, he moved to the South Island of New Zealand to study agriculture at Lincoln University. While there he played both Colts and Division 1 rugby for them, winning titles at both levels.

Family Life
He was born Elias Jack Goodhue in the city of Whangarei and raised on a farm in Whananaki near Hikurangi, New Zealand, along with his older brother Cameron and twin Josh, both of whom also went on to become professional rugby players. In 2020, he married Sophia Eblett, who also attended Mount Albert Grammar School.
