Before Fame
He graduated from the US Air Force Academy with his B.S. in aeronautical engineering in 1996. He would later obtain his M.S. degree in aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998.
Trivia
He was selected for astronaut training as part of NASA's group 20 in 2009, and completed the course in 2011. He spent 135 days in space during his Expedition 51/52 voyage.

He and his wife Elizabeth share two daughters. His parents' names are Gary and JoBelle Fischer.
