About
Irish-American tailor and spy during the American Revolutionary War. He re-entered the public image when he was featured as a character in the broadway musical Hamilton in 2015.
Before Fame
He attended King's College, later Colombia University, where he graduated and began working for his fathers accounting business. He helped Alexander Hamilton enroll in King's College where they then lived together. In 1765, he became one of the first colonists to join the Sons of Liberty secret society with the intent on protecting the rights of the colonists.
Trivia
Along with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, he became one of the 19 founders of the New York Manumission Society, an early organization that was founded on the idea of the abolition of slavery in America.
Family Life
He was born in Ireland but moved to New York with his parents in 1746. He married Elizabeth Sanders Mulligan and together they had three sons and five daughters.
Associated With
He is credited by having saved president George Washington's life twice as a spy for the Sons of Liberty. He was also portrayed by actor Okieriete Onaodowan in the broadway production of Hamilton.
