About
British filmmaker known for his works and success from the 1920s to 1950s. He both directed and produced dozens of film during his long career, which lasted from the silent era of films, to well into the late 50s. He started his first film company, Astra Films, in 1919 after the end of the first World War.
Before Fame
He served in the British army and then the Royal Flying Corps as a trainer and flight instructor.
Trivia
He was awarded four Daily Mail National Film Awards in 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1951.
Family Life
Many of his most popular films were made alongside his third wife, actress Anna Neagle. Although he was born in London, he considered himself to be Irish like the rest of his family.
Associated With
Many regard Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail as the first film with sound, but Wilcox's Black Waters was trade-shown several weeks earlier in 1929.
