Chemist known for his work studying corrosion, for being a professor and leader of metallurgy at MIT for 29 years, and for his contributions to the theory of pitting in stainless steels and the nature of passivity of corrosion-resistant alloys.
Before Fame
He graduated from Brown University in the year 1929 with a BS in chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from MIT in the year 1932. He began working at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research before returning to work as a professor and researcher at MIT.
Trivia
He was the co-author of nearly 200 scientific papers. He edited the Corrosion Handbook (1948) and also wrote the textbook Corrosion and Corrosion Control (1963). He was once the president of the International Thoreau Society and also president of the Rumford Historical Society.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Haledon, New Jersey. He was married to Greta Johnson for 52 years. He had three daughters. He died at home from pneumonia on the date of July 3rd, 1993.
