French candid photographer remembered as the founder of the art of photojournalism. A pioneer of street photography, he was a recipient of the 1981 Grand Prix National de la Photographie.

Before Fame

As a young man, he trained at the studio and art school of Cubist artist André Lhote.

Trivia

During the early 1930s, he had an affair with entrepreneur Caresse Crosby that ended in the suicide of Crosby's publisher husband, Harry Crosby.

Family Life

His marriage to dancer Ratna Mohini lasted from 1937 until 1967. He was married to fellow photographer Martine Franck from 1970 until his death in 2004.

Associated With

His 1952 masterpiece of photojournalism, The Decisive Moment, had on its original cover a piece of art by painter Henri Matisse.
