His songs became anthems of resistance and unity and played an important role during the 2014-2016 Oromo protests.
Before Fame
He began singing at a very young age. He would sing in school clubs and while tending to cattle. He grew up with both a passion for music and civil rights. He was arrested during a protest when he was 17 years old and he was imprisoned for 5 years. He worked on his songwriting skills while in prison which would later influence his music. He released his first album Sanyii Mootii in 2009.
Trivia
was working on his third album Maal Mallisaa before his death, and this album was posthumously released on the anniversary of his passing in 2021. He was a lifelong member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His second album Waa'ee Keenya became the #1 best-selling African music album on Amazon Music at the time in 2013.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Ambo, Ethiopia. He was born to parents Gudatu Hora and Hundessa Bonsa. He was married to Fantu Demisse and they had two daughters together. He was assassinated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June 2020.
