Former Major League Baseball shortstop, coach, and manager, whose nine-year career on the field included bouts with the Boston Red Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Los Angeles Angels. When he was appointed to interim manager of the LA Dodgers in 1998, he led the team to a third place win-loss record amongst MLB teams. He went on to serve as their coach until 2005, and later as coach of the San Diego Padres for 15 seasons.
Before Fame
After graduating from Savanna High School in Anaheim, CA, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 1976 MLB June draft. Before being appointed interim manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he had served two seasons as manager of the Triple-A Minor League Baseball team, the Albuquerque Dukes.
Trivia
After retiring from coaching in the year 2020, he continued to work for the San Diego Padres front office in an advisory role.
Family Life
His younger brother Trevor Hoffman is a Hall of Fame former relief pitcher for the San Diego Padres who once held the title of all-time leader in saves. Their father Ed Hoffman was a longtime usher at Anaheim Stadium before his passing.
Associated With
He took over co-managing duties for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the year 1998, along with Baseball Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda. He has also worked with Padres manager Bruce Bochy.
