Born in Australia to a family of both Greek and English descent, he was married for over twenty years to actress Elizabeth Alexander, with whom he raised two children. After divorcing Alexander in 2006, he married Mary Spartels.

Playing the role of Blackfinger, Spartels appeared with Mel Gibson in the 1985 action movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
