About

Former world champion boxer best known as Little Chocolate. He finished his boxing career with a record of 76-32 with 61 draws. He was officially inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the year of 1990. 

Before Fame

He won his first career boxing title on May 10, 1888, after defeating Tommy Kelly. After winning the 1888 World Bantamweight Title, he later won the World Featherweight Title in May 1891. 

Trivia

He is the first ever Black athlete to win a World Championship in not only boxing but sports in general. In 2018, he was named the sixth greatest athlete in Nova Scotia's sports history. He passed away at a young age in the alcohol ward of a hospital in New York City.

He was born and raised in Halifax, Canada. He and his family lived in the Africville neighborhood of Halifax.
