The author of acclaimed plays in the political thriller genre, this Northern Irish dramatist is particularly well known for In A Little World of Our Own (1997); As the Beast Sleeps (1998); and The Force of Change (2000).
Before Fame
His first two plays, Independent Voice (1993) and Alternative Future (1994), were staged, respectively, at the Tinderbox and Point Fields theatres (both in Belfast, Northern Ireland). Early in his career, he also wrote several BBC Radio dramas, including The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1991) and A Tearful of Dreams (1993).
Trivia
His play Remnants of Fear won the 2006 Aisling Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Culture. His other artistic honors include the 1999 Pearson Best New Play Award (for Trust) and the 1998 Belfast Arts Drama Award (for Sinking).
Family Life
He grew up in a working-class, Protestant, Ulster loyalist family in Northern Ireland.

The 2014 Lyric Theatre (Belfast, Northern Ireland) staging of Mitchell's play Demented starred Game of Thrones actor Ian Beattie.
