He started athletics after watching the World Cup in 1999 and received a scholarship to the University of Johannesburg. He eventually graduated with a Sociology degree from the University of Tennessee.

He was an MP for Kasongo territory in the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

His father is former information Minister of the Congo, Ambassador Kikaya bin Karubi.
