About

German idealist philosopher recognized for his contributions to the philosophy of nature. Significant works of his include System of Transcendental Idealism and Philosophical Inquiries into the Essence of Human Freedom. His thought has exerted an influence upon numerous thinkers of the 20th century and beyond, including Slavoj Zizek, Jurgen Habermas, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. 

Before Fame

He began studying the ideas of Immanuel Kant while working on his doctoral thesis in theology. 

Trivia

He worked as a professor at the University of Würzburg from 1803 to 1806. After leaving Würzburg, he went on to work as secretary of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

His parents were Joseph Friedrich Schelling and Gottliebin Marie.
