Before Fame
He attended Oberlin College. One year prior to his graduation, he published an early poetry collection entitled Tapping the White Cane of Solitude.

Family Life
His father, James Wright, was also a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet. He married Elizabeth Oehlkers in 1999.
