19th-century Slovene poet of the Romantic movement whose poems have been translated into a number of languages such as French, English, German and Spanish.
Before Fame
He was born in the village of Vrba, part of the Habsburg Monarchy, which is in modern day Slovenia. He was educated by Roman Catholic clergy. In 1812, he moved to the Carniolan provincial capital of Ljubljana.
Trivia
He is commonly acknowledged as the greatest Slovene classical poet, said to have inspired almost all later Slovene literature.
Family Life
The third child of eight, Prešeren was the oldest son of a successful farmer and an educated, ambitious mother.
