German swimmer known for becoming the first swimmer to win both the 1500-meter freestyle and 10-kilometer open water races at an international competition at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. He became a world record holder in the short course, 1500 meter freestyle. He won gold medals in the 10-kilometer open water swim and 1500-meter freestyle at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships.

Before Fame

He began swimming at a young age. In 2015, he moved from swimming with his Bremen team to swimming with the SC Magdeburg and attended sports boarding school there. He took part in the 2015 World Championships and finished fifth in the open water swimming over five kilometers. He competed in the 1500m freestyle at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Trivia

He completed an apprenticeship as a real estate agent in 2019. He enjoys German hip-hop and rap music and likes to imagine various songs from these genres playing in his head while he's swimming. He was granted legend status in Magdeburg with his own plaque on the city's Walk of Fame. If he was a superhero, he wishes he had the powers of being invisible and traveling through time.

He was born and raised in Bremen, Germany. He married Sarah Köhler in January of 2022 after getting engaged in December of 2020.
