About

Cuban-American visual artist remembered for his sculptures, minimalist installations, and other works of process art. His most famous pieces include the AIDS-themed billboard "Untitled" and a series of "Dateline" portraits.

Before Fame

He studied art at the University of Puerto Rico and later earned a degree in photography from the Pratt Institute of Art.

Trivia

More than a decade after his death from AIDS, his 1992 artwork "Untitled (Portrait of Marcel Brient)" sold for more than four million dollars.

Family Life

Born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico, he began living in New York City in the late 1970s. He had a long-term relationship with Ross Laycock.
