About

African-American artist and art professor who was best known for her painted story quilts. She is also a performance artist and a mixed-media sculptor. She participates in activism throughout her work. 

Before Fame

She was born and raised in Harlem and studied at the City College of New York. Later, she taught in the art department at the University of California, San Diego.

Trivia

She wrote and illustrated seventeen books for children, including the Coretta Scott King Award-winning work 'Tar Beach' from 1991. 

Family Life

Her second husband was Burdette Ringgold. She and her daughter Michele Wallace co-founded Women Students and Artists for Black Art Liberation. She also had a daughter named Barbara.
