German football manager and former midfielder. He is the technical director of FC St. Pauli. He helped coach the Spanish club CD Tenerife, helping them gain a fifth-place spot in La Liga. Other teams he has coached include Hansa Rostock, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hannover 96. He was the head coach of FC St. Pauli from 2014 to 2017 when he transitioned to technical director.
Before Fame
He was born in Liemke, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany. He began his professional career in 1974 at the Arminia Bielefeld sports club. In the Summer of 1987, he set up a union for professional footballers in Duisburg and began studying for his football coaching license which he achieved in 1989. He retired from football in 1992.
Trivia
In 1981, he suffered a severe injury to his thigh when he sliced it open with his studs but returned to playing just 17 days later. It has been called the "most horrific injury in football ever." He has coached in Greece and Romania. When he managed the Oțelul Galați team in 2014, he managed to save them from relegation.

He is married to Rosi Lienen and they have one daughter, Sarah.
