Taking advantage of the U.S. government's interest in surveying the ecology of the sites where they were planning nuclear installations, he led school-sponsored ecological research.

Trivia

His research found that ecosystems depend on the symbiosis between its various parts: his famous phrase, 'the ecosystem is greater than the sum of its parts' inscribed on the UGA Ecology Building.

Family Life

He grew up in Athens, Georgia, where his father Howard Washington Odum was on the faculty of the University of Georgia.
