French-born American photographer who was a prominent figure in advertising and documentary photography. He is particularly known for the absurdist tone of his photographic work. In 1953, he became a member of the independent photographic collective, Magnum Photos. His photography often showcased his fascination with dogs.
Before Fame
At the age of ten, he and his family moved to the United States. He attended Los Angeles City College where he studied photography. He subsequently moved to New York City where he studied photography and filmmaking at the New School for Social Research.
Trivia
He was drafted into the US Army in the year 1951. During his time in military service, he took on various photographic duties. After military service, he did freelance photography for magazines like Collier's, Look, and Holiday.
Family Life
From 1953 to 1960, he was married to Lucienne Van Kan. Together, they had four children, Ellen, Misha, David, and Jennifer. From 1968-1975, he was married to Diana Dann. From 1977 to 1984, he was married to Susan Ringo. Together they had two children, Sasha and Amelia. From 1995 to 2010, he was married to Pia Frankenberg.
