Before Fame
Wanting to become a concert pianist, he studied music at Rhodes University in South Africa before dropping out of college to move to London.

His controversial biography of Ronald Reagan was entitled Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan.
Family Life
The son of a South African pilot, he was born in Nairobi, Kenya. He was married to Sylvia Jukes Morris from 1966 until 2019.
Associated With
He wrote three biographies of Theodore Roosevelt; the first of these won the Pulitzer Prize in 1980.
