He joined the Northwestern football team as a walk-on, and earned a starting spot in his sophomore year, ending it with a team MVP award.

Joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 1935, he was an All-Pro selection his rookie year; and after his trade to the Chicago Bears he helped the team to two NFL titles.

Family Life

His wife of over 50 years was Jane Fauntz Manske, a bronze medalist at the 1932 Summer Olympics.

Associated With

In one of the most lopsided traded in NFL history, he was sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1938 in exchange for a top draft pick the Bears used on Hall of Famer Sid Luckman.
