Before Fame

Entering Iowa during WW I, he was an All-Big Ten selection his freshman and sophomore seasons, and in his senior helped the team to snap Notre Dame's 20-game winning streak.

Trivia

He entered the NFL as the first black lineman, and stayed there for the next ten seasons, becoming one of the most decorated players of the Rock Island Independents.

Family Life

He was born in Normal, Illinois, and moved to Iowa where his father George Slater became a Methodist minister.
