A twentieth-century American novelist and playwright, he is best known for The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, a 1954 novel that he co- adapted into the popular Broadway musical, Damn Yankees. His other novels include The Sunken Garden (1956) and Stone (1971).
Before Fame
Eleven years after graduating from the University of Maryland, he published his first novel, Night Light.
