She is the 5th woman to ever be elected to the Swiss Federal Council. As a German speaker, her election following the resignation of Joseph Deiss, a French speaker, broke the typical practice of replacing Federal Council members with candidates from the same language group as their predecessor.

She is the daughter of Ruth and Leonz Leuthard. She married her husband Dr. Roland Hausin in 1999.
