Doris Leuthard

About

Politician and former President of the Swiss Confederation, representing the Christian Democratic People's Party. She was a Member of the Swiss Federal Council and former head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs as well as the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications.

Before Fame

She earned her law degree from the University of Zurich and studied language courses in both Paris and Calgary. She served as a partner in a legal firm before turning her sights to politics and representing Canton Aargau as a member of the National Council from 1999 to 2006.

Trivia

She is the 5th woman to ever be elected to the Swiss Federal Council. As a German speaker, her election following the resignation of Joseph Deiss, a French speaker, broke the typical practice of replacing Federal Council members with candidates from the same language group as their predecessor.

Family Life

She is the daughter of Ruth and Leonz Leuthard. She married her husband Dr. Roland Hausin in 1999.

Associated With

In 2018, she was appointed to the High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation by the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres. The panel is co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Jack Ma.
