Before Fame
He studied law in Dublin and spent thirty years as an employee of the Irish Office of the Revenue Commissioners.

In his memoir Sing for the Taxman, he modestly states that he always thought of himself more as a civil servant than as a poet.
Family Life
He was one of several children born to Catherine Lahart and James O'Driscoll. He married fellow poet Julie O'Callaghan.
