He attended Booker T. Washington High School and had an internship working at KOTV as a high school student. He received his bachelor's degree from Jackson State University. He started his broadcasting career while working on his master's degree at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism after he covered the September 11 attacks. He began his first reporting job at CBS affiliate WJTV in the year 2002.

He is passionate about volunteering and has volunteered for Morgan has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Cancer Society, and the NAACP.
