Before Fame
His parents took him on surfing trips as a child. And to his mom's surfing competitions. He would also go back to Japan every year for about two months, mainly around Kunitachi, Tokyo, where his grandparents live. He also made treks to the Shonan region in Kanagawa Prefecture and was able to surf there on occasion.
Trivia
He added the Japanese flag to the Australian one that already adorns his uniform, as a way to represent both nations this year on the World Surf League Championship Tour.
Family Life
He was born and raised in the southern Sydney suburb of Cronulla. His Japanese mother, Akemi, was a champion professional surfer in Japan, and his father, Finbar, also surfed. They met at a pro event in Australia in the 1980s. In 1985, his mother was the Japan Pro Surfing Association's Grand Champ. In 1992, she was chosen as the Surfin Life Female Surfer of the Year. He married in 2021.
