Colombian politician known for being a Senator of the Republic of Colombia and the vice-presidential candidate in the 2018 presidential election for the Green Alliance Party. She was elected mayor of Bogotá, Colombia in 2019. This made her the first woman, and as well the first openly LGBT person, to be elected to this position.
Before Fame
She graduated with a degree in finance, government, and international relations from the Externado University of Colombia. She obtained a master's degree in public administration and urban politics from Columbia University in New York, as well as a Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While in college and graduate school, she became active in school politics. She was elected to the Colombian Senate in 2014 as a candidate for the Green Alliance Party.

She has been a consultant to the United Nations. She is passionate about supporting local businesses. She is a dog lover and has owned multiple dogs.

She was born in Bogotá, Columbia to parents Elías López Reyes and María del Carmen Hernández Ruiz. She has five younger siblings. She married fellow politician Angélica Lozano Correa in December of 2019.
