She passed the California bar examination in 1868 and subsequently sued Hastings College of Law when the school refused to let her enroll because she was a woman.
Trivia
Her name was given to the downtown Los Angeles criminal court building (the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center).
Family Life
She married Jeremiah Foltz, a farmer, when she was fifteen years old. Before Foltz left her in 1876, she gave birth to five children.
