Hong Kong writer, scholar and politician who goes by his pen name, best known for his publications On the Hong Kong City-State series and for his advocacy around localism. He is the founder and leader of the Hong Kong Resurgence Order and the ideological leader of the Hong Kong Autonomy Movement. Until 2016 he served as an assistant professor at the Department of Chinese of Lingnan University.
Before Fame
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1995 he got his doctorate in ethnology from the University of Göttingen in Germany. From 1997 he was a senior advisor to the HKSAR government on cultural, arts, and civic affairs and he worked as a research director in the Home Affairs Bureau until 2007.
Trivia
He has been called "the godfather of localism," speaking out against the destruction of local communities and historical edifices that comes with urbanization. His teaching contract was not renewed in 2016, allegedly because of his localist views. In March of 2021 he posted to his wan.chin.75 Facebook that he and some Hong Kong youths has established a new party, the Hong Kong Civile Party.
