He first discovered his passion for boxing as a young boy growing up. He later served in the United States Army. At the 1964 Summer Olympics, he defeated Heiko Winter of the United Team of Germany before losing to Yevgeny Frolov of the Soviet Union.

He made first official boxing debut while fighting against Juan Rueda on September 11, 1965. He won the match via unanimous decision.

Growing up, he lived with his family in Louisville, Kentucky. His brother Jimmy Ellis was also professional boxer.
