American politician who served in the Florida House of Representatives, the Florida Senate and the United States House of Representatives. She was the first African American since the Reconstruction era to represent Florida in the United States Congress. She passed away in November 2021 at the age of 95.
Before Fame
She earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan. She taught at Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University before winning a seat in the Florida House of Representatives in 1979.
