Prominent Venezuelan architect who designed the Ciudad Universitaria, a campus that was declared a World Heritage Site. Helped develop and modernize such cities as Caracas and Maracay.
Before Fame
He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Gabriel Héraud and León Joseph Madeline. His earliest major commission was the Museum of Fine Arts of Caracas in 1935.
Trivia
He was a proponent of Modernism; many consider the Universidad Central de Venezuela to be his masterpiece.
Family Life
His older brother, Marcel, was also an architect, and his first job would be at the Neward, New Jersey-based architectural firm, Guilbert and Betelle, where his brother worked. He married Paulina Astoul in 1893.
