After submitting a video entry, he was chosen to compete against 11 other entrants at the convention's Golden I Credit Union Arena. He then performed his original track "More Than a Night" and was declared the winner at just 17 years old.

His older brother Carson is also a country music performer. He grew up singing country music alongside his brother and his uncles, Marv and Art.
