Before Fame
He studied music education at West Virginia University, where he also gave guitar lessons to pay for school. He moved to Los Angeles for a while, where he worked as a session musician for two years. Then he moved back to West Virginia, where his attempt to start his own band failed, so her moved on to Nashville.

His father, Keith, was in a band, that he toured with on weekends. That was his first and lasting exposure to music. His mother, Sandy, worked for The Family Dollar.
