Before Fame
He graduated from Illinois University in 1973. He claims to have begun exploring caves at the age of 13 while on a Boy Scouts trip in Kentucky. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, he explored caves in America and Mexico.
Trivia
He has written two books about his experiences, including Yochib: The River Cave and Huautla: Thirty Years in One of the World's Deepest Caves. He is a regular speaker on cruise ships.
Family Life
As a child, he moved from Los Angeles to Atlanta before moving back to Dayton.
