About

Widely celebrated Indian singer, composer, and music director who was the daughter of revered composer Ilaiyaraaja and the sister of proclaimed composers Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja. She became perhaps best known as a playback singer, and has performed songs for an extensive list of films, including Karuvelam Pookkal, Uliyin Osai, and Gundello Godari. She also worked as a music director on the sets of films such as Geeya Geeya and Amirtham.

Before Fame

She attended Rosary Matric School in Chennai before also earning her secondary education in a local institute. In 1995, she made her singing debut with a tune for the film Raasaiya, which earned widespread success. Her first time acting as music director was for the 2002 film Mitr, My Friend.

Trivia

In 2000, she became the recipient of the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer, for her performance of the song "Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu." She had recorded the song for the film Bharathi, which was composed by her father.

Family Life

She was married to R. Sabariraj, who worked as an advertising executive. On January 25th, 2024, she sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer in Sri Lanka.

She composed the music for the 2004 film Phir Milenge, which was directed by Revathi, and starred Shilpa ShettyAbhishek Bachchan, and Salman Khan.
