She initially began playing cricket as a young girl growing up. As a child, she played for the Collingwood women's cricket team.

In the year 1985, she made history after becoming the first women's cricket player to ever be inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. Over 30 years later, her very own Betty Wilson Young Player of the Year award was created to honor the best women's cricket player under the age of 25.
