German dancer and choreographer who became one of the most influential contemporary dance teachers of the 20th century during her 65-year career. She was the recipient of some of the dance world's most prestigious honors, including the the New York Dance and Performance Award.

Before Fame

She moved from Germany to Eugene, Oregon in 1925. She studied at the University of Oregon before moving to New York City during an important time in modern dance.

Trivia

She taught right up until the end and was scheduled to teach a class at Julliard on the day she died.

She was married to potter and economics Dimitry Varley, who passed away in 1984.
