He earned a history degree from St John's College at Cambridge University in 1985.

Trivia

His 2017 book Rogue Heroes: The History of the SAS was his fifth work to be made into a BBC documentary. In 1998, he was honored on the Edgar Allen Poe Awards shortlist for his book The Napoleon of Crime.
