He began training Muay Thai at the age of 15. He took up the sport after having trouble integrating into Swiss culture during his teens.

During his fighting career he had nicknames like "The Black Eagle" and "The Warrior." He had a total of 100 fights during his kickboxing career. In 2010, a documentary about his life and career called Being Azem was released.
