Former actor of Bengali cinema who is most fondly remembered as a character actor from the hundreds of films in which he appeared over the course of his 53-year-long career. He also played the lead role in a Doordarshan Network television serial drama called Naqab. He received widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the titular role in Deshbandhu Chittaranjan, which was based on the life of esteemed freedom-fighter and barrister Chittaranjan Das.
Before Fame
He graduated from the Kolkata-based St. Xavier's College and went on to remain an active member of its Alumni Society for years after. He began his entertainment industry career by performing in stage plays, particularly after becoming an associate of the actor and director Utpal Dutt.
Trivia
In the year 1993, he became a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He was primarily supported by the Left Front Independent Party Alliance and earned his by-election victory from the Chowringhee Assembly Constituency.
Family Life
He got married in 1953. He and his wife went on to become the parents of 4 children, including 1 daughter and 3 sons. He passed away in 1996 at the age of 66. In January 2020, his son Arup and his granddaughter Arijita attended a screening held in his honor, of the film Meghe Dhaka Tara, in which he starred.
